The Arrival of the Giants and Alfs | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
From
the golden-yellow whirling centre white-golden and red-golden hosts
of bright alfs appeared, followed by silvery-white glittering giants.
They all rode on the elements which they governed. The wild and agitated music of the moss-men and the sweeping voices
of their women were followed by dragons that were belching out smoke,
fire and wind, and by huge winged snakes, fire- and poison-spitting. The witches too had swung up the edge of the whirling sea; now they spun white threads, sucked the milk from the clouds through these threads, milked the threads, and buttered this milk with their broomsticks. Also many thirsty, milk-eager giants with yard-wide heads, tuskers
like boars, red eyes, and long soot-coloured hair that hung far over
their ears, flew near, together with their women, on huge boulders and
trudged the ground knee-deep as they rode along. In the rage of the elements they flared up more and more into a furious
frenzy of action, and with their many arms they jolted gigantic pebbles
ahead towards the whisking place of the milky ocean. “Here the ancient, wise custodians of eternal knowledge carry the white rocks of eternal truth into the ocean of happiness as a festive gift of their family,” said Sol. But also the giants took other stones and struck fire from them, as
if from flint-stones, by rubbing a male and a female stone. And other rocks again they threw playfully at each other; and they uprooted huge trees which stood on their flying mountains, wove them together like willows, hit fertile dew-drops from the rocks with these tree-webs, and drove the drops like roaring rains ahead of themselves. “Just as these mighty rulers over the mind drive with their braided
trees the dew from the rocks towards the centre of the frothing milk-ocean,
in the same manner the sage leads the bright truths from the mind of
him who strives for supreme knowledge, into the sources of eternity,”
explained Sol. |
