The Story of the Two Yowans

In Midgard, in a great realm, there once lived a mighty yowan, a wrestler. His daily food consisted of two thousand hundredweights of wheat-flour, and he ate it mixed with thousand hundredweights of a thick pap. How fortunate for the animals of his country that he was a strict vegetarian.

One day he heard about another yowan living in some other country who was said to be stronger than himself. This hurt his pride, and he decided to set out without delay to challenge him.

“So he went to the market and bought four thousand hundredweights of wheat-flour as food for the next two days. This load he put in a bundle on his head and set out.

“After three hours he arrived at a lake which was lying at the border of his country. And since he had become very hungry and thirsty he went down on his knees, bent his head down to the water and quaffed almost half the lake in one draught.

Then he poured part of his wheat-flour into the lake, took a strong oak-tree to stir it, and ate his thick soup.
Feeling full in some way he fell asleep on the spot.

“Now it happened that an elephant came daily to drink from the lake. He came as usual, but to his suprise the lake was empty and dry! When he was about to leave full of indignation, he saw the sleeping yowan.

“Immediately he knew that this yowan had drunk the water, and ferociously he attacked him and trampled on his head.

The wrestler, however, only turned around and said, ”Don't be afraid! From such gentle strokes my headache won't become any better. You have to try harder, dear friend!”

“The elephant stopped and did not know what to do. But then the yowan got up to continue his journey. He saw the elephant, took it by the trunk and swung it over his shoulder. Then he moved on.
“After a few steps he arrived at the house of his rival.

“Come out, yowan of this country!” he called. ”Come out and try to fell me!” “He is not here,” replied the other yowan's wife who stood behind the wall in the yard. ”He is in the forest to fetch some fire-wood.”

“Well then, I will come back again,” said the wrestler. ”In the meantime take this little present I have brought for him.”
And with these words he hurled the elephant over the wall into the yard.

“Mother, Mother, look here, this rival of your son has thrown a mouse into our house!” shouted the woman.
“What harm can it do, my child?” replied the mother-in-law, ”throw it out again!”

And the elephant was thrown another time over the wall and it fell at the feet of the wrestler. He picked it up and left.
“Not bad,” he thought, ”if the wife of the rival takes an elephant for a mouse, for what will the yowan himself take me then?”
