“If someone knows only these first three main states of consciousness, he can never say with certainty whether he is now waking or dreaming; and sometimes someone is convinced of one thing, and someone at the same time is convinced of the opposite.

Therefore the world looks chaotic since in that manner uncertainty rules over the reality of experience.

“The warriors that are generated by the cow carry sharp hatchets with them to separate clearly the waking consciousness from the dreaming consciousness right down to the ground of the deep sleep.

Thus one group of warriors separates the waking consciousness from the dreaming consciousness, while the other group separates the dreaming consciousness from the waking consciousness.

“And while the deep sleep, flashed through by lightnings of experience, turns into waking or dreaming consciousness alternately - just like the darkness of the night turning into the brightness of the day for a moment when flashed through by lightning - Helgi has a hard time to draw up his troops and to explain to them if they are now sleeping or dreaming.

“The duty-conscious king ensures that his entrusted ones do not cease to continue walking on their path of cognition, even if everything appears confused and unintelligible to them.

“In the meantime the cow Savala, with her supernormal powers, creates a fourth group of snow-white, twinkling warriors - resplendent like the purest moon-light.

“And as Helgi urges his troops against these warriors, and the troops direct their attention towards them, the whole army falls asleep again - only this time it is not dark and dull but exceedingly recuperative and bright like the shining full-moon night.

“This is the nature of pure consciousness, the fourth main state of consciousness, that it bestows on us deep, exceedingly recuperative rest and furthermore gives us during that rest - which is much more comprehensive than that of deep sleep - the alert, silvery-white, infinitely refreshing brightness of pure consciousness; thus for the first time in our lives the silver gate of pure cognition opens to us.

From this fourth main state of consciousness we emerge naturally with bright and alert senses, and we now know very exactly whether we go into waking consciousness or dreaming consciousness.

“For the first time therefore, this pure consciousness gives the king's soldiers the certainty whether they are awake or dreaming; furthermore they feel extremely refreshed and lively when they enter waking consciousness from pure consciousness, whereas they used to feel dull and torpid before when they came from deep sleep into waking consciousness.
