“Sehermund has forced the mighty king completely into the role of doing his duty so that he can become active as a statesman for the process of enlightenment; because within the king the hermit has brought about a state of indifference towards the fruits of his action: by giving the king the insight that he is completely powerless, and that all might is exclusively in the hands of the great sage. “In that manner the king is free from all true responsibility before his people, for how should he carry any responsibility if he has no freedom of action at all? “Besides, the king once more has realized unperturbably that he has no private interest in the governmental power; for of what use are all the respect and majesty to him, if he is in reality unfree, indeed the least free in his entire realm: clad into the greatest duties which cling to him like chains and weights. “Therefore the royal government does not appear attractive anymore to Helgi - rather repellent; and if anything at all can be expected from him - now that he has accepted the power of the government and now that he has come here to the hermitage with all its consequence - then it is the fulfilment of his duty alone, not more and not less: only the consequence from his former obligations which he has to honour faithfully - something he is willing to do. “But then no more. He has realized that any additional initiative of his own is useless; he only wants to do what the further course of events requires him, the king, to do, which is first of all to abduct the cow - something that is planned and obviously expedited by Sehermund. “The king himself is only concerned with doing his once assumed duty, not with the result from it, because he does not have any influence on the course of the events anyway - the king Helgi, the sovereign of the earth, knows this all too clearly. “Once the king is released by the mighty sage from the fruits of his action, his unperturbed view can focus now completely on his present action - without having to consider any future effect of his action. Helgi has realized that Sehermund is holding the reigns of all future events tightly in his hand, and thus has assumed full responsibility over all further action of the king; even if Helgi in some manner would seize upon the responsibility again, he would in any case have to violate in some way or the other his own royal duty - something the king would not want to do. Thus there is no return: the Now is lying before him. “Now Sehermund orders his cow to create soldiers to destroy Helgi's army. “From the side of a great sage ”destructioni always and only means: removing the binding obstacles of the ignorant; because all limited mental-emotional bondage deprives man of his freedom which he was originally given by his creator. “The sage cannot expect the ignorant to realize how far cosmic freedom reaches; nor is it of importance to the sage whether the ignorant takes the sage for friend or even foe during the process of liberation: once the sage, at his own discretion, brings about this process of liberation as an act of his infinite grace the goal of freedom has to be reached safely. And as long as the ignorant is willing to walk the way of realization as the sage prescribes it, he cannot expect any unnecessary time-consuming explanation from the sage. |
