The
warriors were armed with keen hatchets. Thus chaos spread all over the army; the soldiers ran about confused, and Helgi found it difficult to draw up his troops again. “In the meantime Savala created a fourth group of snow-white, scintillating warriors - gleaming brightly like the light of the full moon. “And when Helgi urged his army to attack them, the king's soldiers fell asleep again - only this time the sleep was not dark and dull but recuperative indeed and bright as the shining full-moon night. “Now Savala with her supernormal powers produced yet another group of warriors. These again were snow-white and twinkling, but in their white armours and on their white shields permanently black cracks appeared that quickly closed again, and new cracks appeared again at other places. “This deep-blue crevices were flashed through by gleaming, silvery-bright lightnings, so that this time it looked as if the shining full moon was haunted by dark thunderstorms. “And when Helgi's army woke up with a refreshed mind and was urged by the king to highest pugnacity to attack the new warriors cheerfully, the soldiers did not see any meaning in this whole doing - indeed they doubted the purpose of the whole campaign. “For a long time Helgi had to use his full persuasive power and convince every single one of his soldiers again and again to continue fighting. “Who should actually fight against whom?” everyone of them asked all the time. “And when the king replied vehemently they should fight those over there, everyone of his soldiers asked him, ”What do I have to do with them? Who are they anyway - against me? One can't compare us! Fighting with them seems like comparing a distance with a weight; how should that be reasonable?” |
