The Mock Fight of the Seasons

Coming from the winter-mountain the snowstorm raged again with violence; the moon was covered with a grey mist, and under her cover the furious snowstorm stood firm against the hot sandstorm that invaded from the summer-mountain, rushing in under the protection of a solar eclipse.
In the shadow of these two powers of nature, fighting each other, hosts of wild summer- and winter-forces followed suit.

From the mountain of eternal frost hosts and hosts of ice-chips drew near and jumped with their sharp blades and frost-axes at the men of fire who readily attacked - like flaming masses of earth - the ice-soldiers with glowing swords and scuttles.

Under their bold strokes the ice-men melted like water and formed a huge lake which buried all the earth beneath it.
The ember-men in turn flared up brightly when attacked fiercely by the frost-soldiers, and drowned in the floods.
Thus summer and winter fought in the darkness of sun and moon, in deep dark night, man against man, the fight for the course of the times.
In the meantime, however, the giantesses began to catch all the fire- and frost-warriors with their yarn, and spurred their pugnacity even more.
Above the fighting masses the hot and cold storms continued to rage unchanged, raving against each other.

Now from the third mountain warriors rushed in. Glowing hot and icy cold at the same time, they hit all fighters with their heat- and cold-giving swords, clubs and axes, bringing much confusion into the ranks of the first two groups.
Now even the stars grew dim, and all light came only from the battle-field where red, white and variegated sparks flew about in wild turmoil; Mani could not even tell anymore who was fighting whom.

In the heights too, the new warrior forced his way and secured himself a place. Like hot-cold rage he rushed in from the third mountain, pushed through the frost- and fire-winds that were battling against each other, and increased the vehemence of the elements.

In the light of the lightning, that struck from everywhere, winter with his ice-cold penetrating eyes stood tall behind the ever new approaching frost-fighters, stemming his colossal icicle against the attacking heat.

Thus he strictly confined all the fire, and a stifling sultriness spread from there over the fighting armies.

Summer stood opposite the frost-giant; blazing bright red like blazing embers he looked at winter - as if to scorch him with his eyes.
In his hands he held a red-glowing, gleaming club against the snow-storm, and ignited it so that it flared up brightly.
The heated snow gathered as dark masses of clouds above the suffocating sultriness which was already lying motionless above the warriors.

Between the fronts now the conqueror of the third mountain appeared - none inferior to the two other rulers in size or strength, yet superior in versatility of combat.
He thrust a mighty, glowing-hot and ice-cold spear into the dark massive clouds, and the waters released so suddenly poured down on all the fighters with unimaginable violence. The floods from the heights brought with them masses of embers and ice, and they were escorted by wild unruly flashes of lightning, followed suit by thunder.
When the tumult in its vehemence came too close to Mani, fear flashed through her; quickly she closed her eyes and thought of nothing. And again she fell into a deep, rescueing sleep.
