All too soon the three beautiful maids vanished from Mani's sight into
the depth of the palatial garden. Only too much she would have liked
to continue watching their play and listening to their songs. And suddenly the picture changed, as if urged by the still limited forces of her free will: a violent rumble rang through the air from far and made the earth tremble; the trees, shrubs and the grass rose from the ground again and ran about; a furious wind rushed near and began to thrash upon the leaves of the forest. The trees had a hard time not to fall, and on their flight into uncertainty they had to muster their utmost skill. Deep within the earth the rocks stirred and with muffled sounds expressed
their urge to wander. The magnificent crystal palace had vanished, and suddenly in its place
a cleft dragon-fortress rose crudely into the air - as if hewn with
one monstrous stroke from a single piece of rock. The well had dried up; a bubbling morass had taken its place and stifled
the whole area with its suffocating breath. Now they hurled the mountains so far away that Mani could hardly see
them anymore; but she was well able to hear the rumble they caused as
they hit the ground. |
