On the next clearing Mani and Sol encountered a lively turmoil. In the light of the full moon they saw a chase, where a flock of cawing crows chased after one of them. However, as soon as they had caught up with the wantonly fluttering crow on a branch, she quickly transformed into a squirrel and swiftly ran down the trunk.

Immediately the others followed her example, and the wild chase went on. At the bottom of the tree, however, Mani did not see the first squirrel anymore; it seemed to have vanished as if swallowed by the ground.
And the others too, as soon as they reached the end of the tree-trunk, seemed to disappear.

“Look, they have turned into ants and are climbing up the tree again,” Sol explained to his sister, but she could not see the small animals due to the distance.

On the trunk, however, she noticed a certain glitter in the moonlight, which was moving upwards, and she presumed that it was the ants.

But suddenly also the twinkling had disappeared again. ”Now they have turned into wood-worms, eating their way through the pole,” Sol continued. ”Soon we will see them again.”

And Mani saw four round paws, which swiftly moved down the thick trunk of the tree, immediately followed by a number of similar paws.
At the bottom a fat, brown bear appeared from behind the trunk and ran away from the tree across the clearing.

He often somersaulted, rolling over the green turf like a big brown furry ball.
The others again followed his example, and one could easily see how much fun they all had with the chase.

Now the first bear transformed into a butterfly, which gracefully tumbled over the flower-meadow, as if still dizzy from all the somersaults - nibbling here and there from the many rich flowers.
Immediately the rest followed his example, and inebriatedly the swarm of butterflies danced about before Mani's eyes.

Eventually the first butterfly changed into a large strong elephant which stood there, pausing, and looked back to the others.
The second butterfly turned into a huge tiger with glistening eyes. He jumped on the back of the elephant, waiting there expectantly.

The third butterfly assumed the shape of a wolf and with a mighty bound leaped on the elephant and further up on the tiger.
He was followed by a wild cat. Swiftly she ran up the trunk of the elephant, who held it towards her, and crouched on the back of the wolf.

Behind the cat a frog leaped up the trunk, climbing the ladder of the creatures in three more strides. Proudly he sat at the top and looked around.
When the sixth butterfly came flying in the shape of an eagle, alighting on the raised trunk of the elephant, the frog jumped forward and nestled happily between his cosy wings.
One of the butterflies did not change; it sat down in the flower, which the silvergrey vigilant eagle held in his beak.
